by Apostle Julie Hartigan
In this book of Pastor Eleanor Joy’s, she demonstrates God’s power and grace as He teaches us how to love ourselves and to love others. The Overcoming Spirit reflects on the need of prison ministry and what it is like inside the walls of the jail as its own city. What seems like a severe punishment turns out to be a mission field where multitudes of people need God’s healing and love.

The thought came to write “An Overcoming Spirit” after the Lord heard my cry and delivered me from a cold jail cell, while facing a possible ten year sentence in a federal prison. While looking out the single window in the cell, the thought ran through my mind Today may be the last time I’ll see outside for a long time. The corrections officer took me back to the holding cell where the other female inmates were also waiting to face their fates before the judge. While we waited for the elevator I turned to him and said, “I’m going to write a book.” His look was one of affirmation, although he didn’t say a word. As I look back over that incident, I wonder if he had heard those words before; possibly from other women who were once in this same situation that I now found myself in. I spoke these words on February 3, 2006.
